Mark Herzlich was named Defensive Player of the Year for the Atlantic Coast Conference this past season as a member of the Boston College Eagles. A lot of people see him going into the NFL, something which he put off for one more year after turning down entering the Rookie Draft to complete his final season at BC. He's 21 with his whole life ahead of him. And he just found out he has cancer.
I realize people get cancer everyday, but just hearing this news kind of effected me the same way hearing about Red Sox' pitcher Jon Lester having non-Hodgkins Lymphoma a couple of years ago did. Total and utter shock. It's a mixture of Mark being a hometown fella, and also REALLY close to my age. I mean, one day you're making tackles and breaking up pass attempts on the football field, and the next day you're in a doctor's office finding out you have Ewing's Sarcoma (a tumor found in bone or soft tissue).
Mark is determined to beat it out though and return to the football field, and I think that's AWESOME. And I didn't write this to have people pity him, I just wrote it as more of a reaction to me finding out. Things just hit you differently when you're younger and something like this happens to someone your own age, that's all. Celebrity Dirt wants to wish Mark good luck and a speedy recovery so he can get his ass back out on the gridiron soon!
