A new biography is out on TV legend Merv Griffin, and it's offering up some insider info -- he was gay. The new book, Merv Griffin: A Life in the Closet, reveals that Merv had a ridiculously active gay sex life that remained underwraps with some HUGE stars. James Dean, Marlon Brando, Rock Hudson, and Liberace were just some of Merv's lovers that are named in the book. Aside from homosexuality being really looked down upon back in the day (let's be real, has it changed ::cough::Prop 8::cough::), a source reveals another reason Merv didn't want to be outted.
Merv didn't want the disgrace that Liberace and Rock Hudson suffered through when they got AIDS. He worked too hard to create 'Merv Griffin the star' to let the reality of his personal life interfere with the Hollywood image he desperately tried to sustain until his dying day.
Pretty shocking to hear about, but at the same time, not surprising. Shocking because obviously no one would suspect Merv of being gay, but not surprising because he probably really believed coming out of the closet back in those days would've ruined his career.
