Why was Nicolette Sheridan killed off of "Housewives?"

There are a couple of different stories as to why Nicolette Sheridan's character of Edie Britt was written off of Desperate Housewives last month. TV Guide is reporting that creator Marc Cherry ended up having a disagreement with the real-life person who inspired the character of Edie, but People is reporting that the real deal is that Marc was forced to cut back costs, and letting Nicolette go would save them $100,000-$400,000 per episode. If the latter is the case, Marc said that it was Nicolette that went over the other housewives because "Edie's already slept with most of the guys on the street and has caused about as many problems as she could."
It was a sad, sad day when she was killed off. Housewives fans lost a great pair of a legs and a great rack...of knowledge.
